We all know by now that Timothy and the Apocalypse never does things by halves. The electronic avant-garde brainchild of Timothy Poulton has been pushing the envelope on electronic music releasing music which embraces cinematic beats and ambiguous trip-hop samples to create an alchemy of electronic downtempo dance music. Recently the producer released his album “Fragments” which was a collection of electronic tracks coming together to form a fluid and engrossing songbook that showed that Timothy and the Apocalypse wasn’t afraid of a challenge.
His new single “Voice Like An Echo” takes us further into this galaxy that he’s creating with a celestial track that burns brightly with an upbeat rhythm and heartfelt lyrics that hint at a longing.
The track is richly multilayered with a drum and bass beat, drum samples, pianos and airy synths and sonic punctuations that build incrementally as the feminine vocals plead, “don’t ever let go”. It’s so atmospheric and indulgently textural that it’s impossible to not get swept away by the sentiment of the song. If Timothy and the Apocalypse ever need another project, he’d be a more than perfect composer for the gaming world. There is a slightly retro vibe to “Voice Like An Echo” with elements of Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada’s production process seeping in. The end result is a song that compositionally sounds well balanced in its dreamy delivery.
Those who love ambient music that dips into experimental flourishes will find a friend in Timothy and the Apocalypse.
“Voice Like An Echo” is out now and available on Spotify and Apple Music. It’s well worth checking out to hear one of Australia’s most unique producers.
